Shungu (lamentations of a Zimbabwean Youth)

Dai kushungurudzika iri mvura inodiridzira tarisiro

dai ndava nezimuhacha rezviroto rizere zvibereko

Vanun’una, madzikoma naivo vemapepa

vachiswerotaurawo nezvangu

Asi ndakarasika nguva, nenyika yekuzvarirwa
Kupokana kunoita zvinhu zvichiramba,

ungati pane nyika dzekunze dzakaisa

masanctions pazvirongwa zvangu

Ndinoswera ndichiita semwana wemba yeumambo

padandemutande Ini necellphone yangu

Asi tirimo mumasango kutengesa

mabhero, ndiyo hustle yacho

Ko kundizadza nedzidzo netarisiro munyika isina mikana

ndiko kuita sei?Kundipa izwi munyika yatinoswera

takavharwa miromo maida kuti zvidii?

Ndaneta,ndapererwa

Chiregai kuzvinetsa nekunditsvaka,

 ndiripo pano- online, online kusvikira

ndarangarirwawo nebasa…

English translation

If only despair could water my dreams and aspirations

Wouldn’t i be boasting of a huge muhacha tree of riches

i would be the talk of family, friends and the media

But i was born in a wrong time and country

The way things conspire against me,certainly

You would think my plans are on some country’s

Sanctions list

I am a celebrity on social media, everyday faking royalty

Reality is i am struggling to make ends meet selling

Imported second hand clothes- such is my hustle

But,why? Why gift me with education and big aspirations

In a country void of opportunities? Giving me a big voice in

A place where we are always gagged, really, to what end?

I am tired,i am hopeless

Trouble yourselves not, looking for me

I will be here , always online, until

                  Someone gives me a job….
